The skin underneath your breasts can become irritated when heat, sweat, moisture, and friction get trapped in the fold. Hormonal changes can also affect sweating and skin sensitivity, which may make an existing problem more noticeable. The resulting irritation can leave skin red, raw, peeling, or darker afterward. But persistent peeling or soreness isn’t automatically a hormone problem, it can also be intertrigo, contact dermatitis, or a yeast/fungal infection.
Why does it keep coming back?
Skin folds create a warm, moist environment where irritation can keep repeating. Tight bras, synthetic fabrics, sweat, friction, fragranced body products, and staying damp after bathing can all contribute. Once the skin is irritated, the protective barrier is compromised and becomes easier to damage again. Darkening can also occur after inflammation, so the discoloration may stick around even after the original irritation improves.
What can I do without steroids?
Start by keeping the area clean, cool, and dry. Wash gently, pat the fold completely dry, and wear breathable clothing and a well-fitting bra that doesn’t constantly rub the area. Avoid fragranced products, harsh scrubbing, and applying random oils or heavy creams to already-moist skin folds. If you suspect a yeast or fungal infection, don’t keep treating it as ordinary dry skin, an appropriate antifungal treatment may be needed. If the area is repeatedly raw, spreading, painful, cracked, oozing, foul-smelling, or isn’t improving, have a healthcare professional examine it so you know what you’re actually treating.
This is one situation where more body products aren’t necessarily better. When skin under the breasts is already raw and peeling, the priority is getting the irritation under control, not covering it with a beautiful-smelling body butter.
Glóavia’s body-care products are designed for comfortable, moisturized skin, but a persistent rash in a skin fold deserves to be identified first. Once the skin is healthy and comfortable again, that’s when your body-care ritual can come back in.
