Why Does My Melasma Flare Up When I Sit in Front of a Hot Oven or Computer Screen, Even When Wearing Mineral SPF 50?

Heat can be a genuine problem for some people with melasma. Sitting close to a hot oven, stove, fireplace, or other intense heat source can raise the temperature of your skin and may contribute to inflammation that makes melasma harder to control. A computer screen is a different story. Screens emit visible light, but current evidence doesn’t show that ordinary computer use is a major melasma trigger for most people. So if your melasma seems worse after hours at your computer, heat, sunlight coming through a window, or other factors may be more relevant than the screen itself.

But I’m wearing SPF 50. Why isn’t that enough?

Because sunscreen isn’t a force field against every melasma trigger. Mineral SPF can provide excellent protection against UV, but melasma can also be influenced by visible light and heat. This is one reason tinted sunscreen containing iron oxides can be useful for people concerned about pigmentation: iron oxides help provide protection against portions of visible light that ordinary UV sunscreen doesn’t address as well. And if you’re standing directly in front of a blazing oven, your sunscreen isn’t designed to prevent your skin from getting hot.

What can I actually do?

Keep using your broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher consistently, and consider a tinted sunscreen with iron oxides if melasma is a major concern. Try not to stand directly over or in front of intense heat for long periods, and use practical shade and clothing when you’re outdoors. If you spend hours near a sunny window, remember that UVA can pass through ordinary glass. And don’t assume every darkening episode means your sunscreen “failed”—melasma is stubborn, and several triggers can overlap. If your pigmentation is persistent or worsening, a dermatologist can help you build a treatment plan.

Where Glóavia fits in

Melasma doesn’t need a 14-step punishment ritual. Consistent protection and a thoughtful brightening routine matter more than throwing every acid on your face because one dark spot ticked you off.

Glóavia’s C+ Ferulic Glow Serum is designed to support a brighter, more even-looking complexion as part of a consistent skincare routine. Pair your brightening routine with serious daily sun protection, and remember that protecting your skin from UV and visible light is just as important as what you put on the dark spots afterward.

Because if you’re trying to fade pigmentation while repeatedly giving it exactly what it loves, we’re just going in circles.

Yep. There’s a Real Person Behind Glóavia.
