Why Do My Armpits Smell Metallic or Sour Even When I Use Clinical Antiperspirant?

A metallic or sour armpit smell can happen even when you’re using a clinical-strength antiperspirant. Antiperspirants reduce sweating, but they don’t completely stop the bacteria on your skin from breaking down sweat and producing odor.

Why does this happen?

Armpit odor isn’t actually caused by sweat alone. Sweat mixes with bacteria, skin oils, product residue, and other compounds on the skin, which can create different smells, including sour, tangy, onion-like, or occasionally metallic odors.

Clinical antiperspirant can reduce how much sweat reaches the skin without eliminating those other factors.

What can you try?

Wash your armpits gently and make sure they’re completely dry before applying antiperspirant. If you’re using a clinical antiperspirant, applying it at night can improve its effectiveness because you’re generally sweating less while you sleep.

Also check your clothing. Synthetic fabrics can hold onto body odor even after washing, so a shirt can sometimes put the smell right back onto freshly washed skin.

Avoid aggressively scrubbing your armpits or constantly switching to harsh antibacterial products. Irritated skin can become more difficult to manage and may make odor seem worse.

When should you get it checked?

If the odor is suddenly very different from your normal body odor, doesn’t improve with basic hygiene and clean clothing, or comes with itching, redness, pain, a rash, drainage, or other skin changes, talk with a healthcare professional.

A persistent unusual odor can sometimes be related to a skin condition or infection, so it’s worth checking rather than simply adding stronger deodorant.
