Why Did My Dark Spots Turn Darker After Using a 20% Vitamin C Serum, and Is It Permanent?

A 20% vitamin C serum isn’t supposed to make dark spots permanently darker, but a strong formula can irritate some people’s skin. If the product causes burning, redness, peeling, or inflammation, that irritation can sometimes trigger or worsen post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, particularly in skin that’s already prone to pigmentation. The darkening may also have nothing to do with vitamin C itself. Other ingredients, sun exposure, an unstable formula, or another irritation happening at the same time can muddy the picture.

Why would a brightening serum make pigmentation look worse?

Because your skin doesn’t care that the bottle says brightening. If a high-strength formula irritates you, inflammation can leave behind more pigment after the irritation settles. Vitamin C formulas also vary considerably in stability and formulation. A product can contain 20% vitamin C and still behave very differently from another 20% product. If your skin started burning, stinging, peeling, or becoming red shortly after you introduced it, that’s an important clue that the problem may be irritation rather than the vitamin C simply “not working.”

Is the darkening permanent?

Not necessarily. Pigmentation caused or worsened by inflammation can fade over time, although how quickly it improves varies from person to person and depends on the depth and cause of the pigmentation. For now, stop using a product that is clearly irritating your skin, keep your routine gentle, and be diligent about broad-spectrum sunscreen. Don’t immediately attack the darker spots with stronger acids or additional brightening products—that can create another round of irritation and pigmentation. If the discoloration continues to worsen or you’re unsure what caused it, a dermatologist can help identify the type of pigmentation and appropriate treatment.
