Hair shedding and hair breakage can look similar when you’re washing or detangling Type 4C hair, but they’re not the same thing. Shedding happens when a hair strand reaches the end of its natural growth cycle and comes out from the follicle. Breakage happens when the hair shaft snaps somewhere along its length.
How can you tell the difference?
Look at the hairs you’re losing.
A naturally shed hair is usually a full-length strand, and you may notice a tiny white or club-shaped bulb at one end. That bulb is part of the normal shedding process, it isn’t the follicle itself.
Broken hair is usually shorter pieces of different lengths. You may see lots of tiny strands around your sink, clothing, pillow, or bathroom without that little bulb at the end.
With Type 4C hair, breakage can be especially easy to miss because tightly coiled strands naturally bend and curl back on themselves. A strand can also break from dryness, repeated manipulation, tight styles, heat, chemical processing, or rough detangling.
Why does Type 4C hair seem to shed so much?
Here’s where things get confusing.
The tight curl pattern can make naturally shed hairs stay trapped in the hair until wash day or detangling day. So instead of seeing a few strands every day, you might see what looks like a giant pile of hair all at once.
That doesn’t automatically mean you’re losing an unusual amount of hair.
On the other hand, if you’re seeing progressively shorter pieces, lots of snapped hairs, thinning around particular areas, or a noticeable change in density, don’t automatically blame your curl pattern. Excessive breakage and true hair loss can have very different causes and may need professional evaluation.
How do you reduce breakage?
Focus on moisture, gentle handling, and reducing unnecessary tension.
Detangle carefully, preferably with adequate slip; avoid repeatedly manipulating dry, fragile hair; be cautious with high heat and chemical processing; and pay attention to protective styles that feel excessively tight.
A good hair routine should make your hair easier to handle, not require you to fight with it every wash day.
Glóavia’s hair-care collection includes products designed to support a gentle, moisture-focused routine for textured and curly hair. They won’t stop normal shedding or treat medical hair loss, but reducing dryness and rough handling can help you protect the hair you already have from unnecessary breakage.
The easiest rule to remember: if the whole strand came out, think shedding. If the strand snapped somewhere in the middle, think breakage.
