If you have low-porosity hair and regularly use heavy butters or oils, buildup can become a frustrating cycle: your scalp feels coated, your hair feels weighed down, and then you clarify aggressively and end up with dry, brittle ends.
The trick is to clean the scalp thoroughly without treating your entire head of hair like it needs to be stripped.
Start at the scalp
Clarifying shampoo is designed to remove buildup from products, oils, and other residues. Concentrate it on your scalp and roots rather than repeatedly scrubbing the lengths.
Use your fingertips—not your nails—to massage the shampoo into the scalp. Let the lather rinse through the lengths rather than aggressively rubbing your ends together.
You may need a second cleanse if you’ve used a particularly heavy amount of butter or oil, but more shampoo isn’t automatically better.
Don’t clarify every time you wash
How often you need to clarify depends on how much product you use, how often you wash, your scalp, and how quickly buildup develops.
If your scalp feels clean and comfortable, there’s no reason to reach for a strong clarifying shampoo simply because it’s part of your routine.
Watch for signs of buildup such as a coated or waxy feeling, dullness, hair that won’t absorb products normally, or a scalp that feels congested or unusually greasy despite washing.
Protect those ends
Your ends are the oldest and most fragile part of your hair, so they deserve a different approach.
After clarifying, follow with a moisturizing conditioner or treatment, concentrating on the lengths and ends. Detangle gently while the hair has plenty of slip, and avoid piling the hair into a rough knot while washing.
If your ends are already dry or fragile, don’t compensate for heavy scalp buildup by repeatedly clarifying the entire length of your hair.
What about the heavy butters?
You don’t necessarily have to give them up.
Try using smaller amounts and keeping heavier products primarily where your hair actually needs them. If you’re constantly layering butter over butter because your hair still feels dry, the issue may be product buildup rather than a lack of more product.
A lighter routine can sometimes make low-porosity hair feel better than continually adding more.
Glóavia’s hair-care collection includes a shampoo and treatment designed for a moisture-focused routine. They aren’t substitutes for a dedicated clarifying shampoo when you truly have heavy buildup, but they can fit into the gentler wash-and-condition routine between clarifying sessions.
Clean the scalp. Protect the ends. And don’t punish your hair for using too much butter.
