You don’t need to wait a specific amount of time. Vitamin C does not need a 20-minute countdown before sunscreen, and applying sunscreen immediately after your vitamin C serum doesn’t automatically deactivate either product. Apply your vitamin C, let it absorb or settle comfortably, and then apply your sunscreen as the final step of your morning skincare routine.
So where did the waiting rule come from?
Skincare routines have accumulated a lot of rules that sound scientific but aren’t actually necessary. Vitamin C and sunscreen work differently: vitamin C is an antioxidant ingredient used in skincare, while sunscreen is designed to protect the skin from UV radiation. Using them together is generally compatible, and antioxidant skincare can complement a good sun-protection routine.
What matters more than watching the clock is using the products correctly. If your vitamin C serum is still very wet or slippery, giving it a moment to settle can make sunscreen easier to apply evenly. That’s a texture issue, not a chemical requirement.
What’s the routine supposed to look like?
Cleanse, apply your vitamin C serum, allow it to settle for a moment if needed, and then apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen generously. You don’t need to sit around waiting for your vitamin C to “activate” before protecting your skin. If your vitamin C causes stinging, redness, or peeling, that’s a different issue, using more or layering it with additional strong actives isn’t going to make your skin happier.
And remember: sunscreen is the step you don’t want to skimp on. Follow the product’s application instructions and reapply as needed based on sun exposure.
