Sunday mornings always began before you were ready to wake up. You’d lie in bed listening to the quiet sounds coming from the kitchen, the cupboard doors opening, a spoon against a mixing bowl, the soft hum of someone already halfway through the day. When you finally wandered in, the whole room smelled like fresh blueberries and warm pumpkin, sweet and rich against the cool autumn air coming through the screen door. There was flour on the counter, something baking in the oven, and a little bowl of berries waiting where you knew you weren’t supposed to touch them.

You’d sit at the kitchen table with your feet tucked beneath you, watching her work while sunlight slowly moved across the floor. She’d pretend not to notice when you reached for another blueberry. You can still remember the sound of her laughing when she caught you. Years later, you can walk into a dozen different kitchens and smell a hundred different things, but nothing ever takes you back quite like Sunday morning.
