How Often Should You Exfoliate Your Face?

Most people should exfoliate their face 1–3 times per week. Exfoliating helps remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and keep skin looking smoother and brighter. However, exfoliating too often can damage the skin barrier and cause irritation.

The right frequency depends on your skin type and the type of exfoliant you’re using.

General Exfoliation Guidelines

Sensitive skin

Once per week is usually enough. Over-exfoliating can quickly lead to redness and irritation.

Normal or combination skin

Two times per week works well for most people.

Oily or acne-prone skin

You may tolerate exfoliation up to three times per week, depending on the strength of the product.

If your skin starts to feel tight, irritated, or overly dry, it’s a sign you may be exfoliating too often.

Chemical vs Physical Exfoliation

There are two main types of exfoliation.

Chemical exfoliants use ingredients like AHAs or BHAs to dissolve dead skin cells. These tend to be gentler when formulated properly.

Physical exfoliants use small particles or tools to manually scrub away dead skin cells. These can work well, but harsh scrubs can sometimes cause micro-irritation if used too aggressively.

Signs You’re Over-Exfoliating

If you notice any of these symptoms, your skin may need a break:

  • Redness or burning
  • Tight, shiny skin
  • Increased sensitivity
  • Flaking or irritation
  • Breakouts that seem worse than usual

Healthy skin should feel smooth and balanced, not raw or stripped.

The Key Is Balance

Exfoliation can be helpful for improving skin texture and allowing skincare products to absorb better, but more isn’t always better. The goal is simply to remove buildup without disrupting your skin barrier.

At Glóavia, the focus is always on supporting the skin barrier and maintaining healthy hydration, which is why balanced routines tend to produce the best long-term results.
